Jane Craig is the brilliant hot-shot producer, committed to fighting the trend toward flashy, style-over-substance "personality" news, whose job it now is to make Tom look like a newsman. Aaron Altman is the dedicated reporter, utterly devoid of on-camera charisma, who's jealous and resentful of Tom's instant success both on camera with the public and off camera with Jane.
